World Snooker Secure Sponsor for Masters
In Barry Hearn’s first move since taking over as World Snooker chairman it was announced today that The Masters tournament which starts on the 10th January has secured a sponsorship deal from Pokerstars.com.
The largest online Poker room has initially signed a one year contract with World Snooker and the move will delight players and fans as the most prestigious invitational snooker event once again has a brand name sponsor.
The Masters had been without a deal since the Saga Insurance contract had expired and this deal with Poker Stars has come at exactly the right time.
The financial details of the package have not been released but Barry Hearn has said that the deal is “an acceptable amount for a last minute deal.”
It seems as if Pokerstars.com may have receieved a bargain, however, if the TV ratings are good then they may look to extend the deal further.
Barry Hearn has already said that he would like to return snooker to it’s glory days of the 1980′s and that he feels a fresh approach is needed.
There is no denying that Hearn himself as Chairman of the PDC has done wonders for darts; and it is possible that he will look to use these sponsorship connections to develop snookers dwindling prospects.
