Williams Wins First Players Tour Championship Snooker Event
Mark Williams put on a tremendous display in the final of snooker’s first ever Players Tour Championship event in Sheffield at the weekend. The Welshman demolished Stephen Maguire 4-0 in the final with breaks of 75, 64, 59 and 82 to beat the Scotsman and pick up the £10,000 winners cheque.
Under the new format Williams also picked up 2,000 World Ranking points which will no doubt come in handy later in the year.
The PTC is a new iniative from World Snooker that pits the 96 professional against 32 amateur qualifiers. It has it’s own separate Order of Merit that could determine qualifying places onto the main tour for the 2011/12 season. The 96 professionals, like Mark Williams, can pick up ranking points towards the main tour by reaching the last 64 round.
The first event was a massive success and Williams told World Snooker, “These events are excellent, I was only there for two days and I’m going home with some money and ranking points. There are 12 events and even if you only won one match in each you’d pick a lot of points up. They’re also great match practice for the main ranking events.”
There were also a couple of surprise results in the early rounds as some of the top amateurs took some big scalps. Shaun Murphy lost to Mitchell Mann and Ryan Day capitulated against Michael Wasley. Brazilian, Igor Figuierado also performed well and reached the Last 32 phase.
