Selby Comes from Behind to Lift PTC 2 Title
Mark Selby is the latest top 16 ranked snooker player to make the most of the increased playing opportunities this season by winning the latest round of the Players Tour Championships in Sheffield.
The Leicester based cueman came from 3-1 down against Barry Pinches to win the title 4-3. The win provided Selby with a £10,000 winners cheque and the all-important 2000 ranking points that went with the victory.
Norwich based Pinches won three consecutive frames after losing the first to go into a 3-1 lead with breaks of 72, 79 and 95. Selby then rallied and one the fifth frame before knocking in a 133 and a 116 as Pinches failed to score a single point in the last two frames.
“I played really well throughout the event,” Selby told worldsnooker.com. “The tables and conditions were very good and the standard was high. It was a strong field and there were some shock results which shows the quality of the amateur players.
“In the final I missed a black off its spot in the second frame and without doing anything else wrong I was 3-1 down. But I stuck in there and managed to turn it around.”
One of the best amateur performances of the weekend was by young Scotsman Anthony McGill, the Glaswegian’s amazing run came to an end at the quarter-final stages at the hands of Gerard Greene. McGill had previously beaten three professionals en route to the quarter-finals. Jimmy Michie 4-1, Dave Harold 4-1 and a whitewash of Stephen Maguire 4-0. He is certainly a player to look out for in the future.
The win puts Selby top of the PTC Order of Merit after two events.
