World Team Championships LogoThe Great Britain team made up of Darren Appleton, Imran Majid, Daryl Peach, Mark Gray and Karl Boyes have put their names into the history books by winning the inaugural WPA World Team Championships in Hannover Germany.

After being sent to the one-loss side early on after losing to Sweden Great Britain never looked back.On the left side of the chart they had comfortable wins against Korea (4-2) and Israel (4-0) to reach the last 16 knockout stages.

In another astonishing match they beat home favourites Germany 4-0 to reach the last 8.

They almost came unstuck against China at the quarter-final stage as a level match went to the innovative shootout to decide the winner. After the match was tied at 3 sets each the players had to try and pot an 8-ball, off what would be similar to the black spot in snooker. The cue ball is placed in the centre of the head string making it quite a tough ask. Each player has one go with the most pots putting a team through, on this occasion it was GBR that progressed to play surprise package Greece.

On the other side of the chart The Philippines had gone completely undefeated throughout the tournament and came up against Russia in the semi-finals. All looked to be going to plan after they won the match 4-1 to get into the final.

Britain beat Greece by a 4-2 scoreline and stepped up to play the Philippines in the final.

In most people’s eyes the Philippines team of Dennis Orcullo, Marlon Manalo, Ronnie Alcano, Warren Kiamco, Antonio Lining and Lee Van Corteza looked to beat very hot favourites for the title.

It was not the case though as after the Philippines took the opening 8-ball doubles match Britain never looked back and won the final by an impressive 4-1 scoreline.
