Double, Double for Kimberley at Wavertree
Birmingham’s Roy Kimberley took both the Pro-Cup and Main Event for the second successive time at the third tour stop of the 2009 BWPPA Dynamic Billiards 9-ball tour at Rileys in Wavertree in Liverpool. Kimberley who is also competing on the GB9 tour this season beat Glaswegian Matt Duffy 7-5 in the Pro-Cup semi-finals on the Saturday to set up a final against Liverpudlian Tony Southern who also took his semi-final 7-5 beating Sheffield’s Gary Swift. Kimberley took the final with a 7-2 victory, in the final Kimberley played great match-play 9-ball and hardly missed a ball, in the match Roy also compiled three break and run-outs.
Onto the Main Event on the Sunday and Roy started where he left off demolishing Mark McNeil 7-1 in the last 16 before taking a 7-4 victory over Scot Graham McClounnan, and then a surprising 7-0 whitewash over Ireland’s Fred Dinsmore in the semis. Kimberley topped off his fantastic weekend beating BWPPA Chairman Matthew Gleaves 7-2.
In the Challenge-Cup it was Paul Stevenson who took the honours in only his second BWPPA event with an incredible 5-4 win over Cockney Frankie Gillen.
Roy Kimberley’s performance means that he tops both the Pro-Cup and Main Event rankings going into the final event of the season at Barnsley in December but with nothing to choose between him and second place. The prize for topping the Main Event rankings at the end of the season is a custom-made cue by one of the most well renowned cue makers in the world Wayne Holmes worth £1000.
