9 Ball: Elimination Rounds Cause Some Shocks

World 9-ball Championship 2010Today was the start of the elimination rounds at the 2010 WPA World 9-Ball Championships in Doha, Qatar. It was not a day to remember for some of the star names taking part in this event.

The last time this tournament was held, 2007, Daryl Peach of Britain became the World Champion, sadly his recent form deserted him as he fell in the first loser’s side round today to young Ukrainian, Artem Koshovoi. The 9-8 scoreline reflects the tense nature of the match.

Peach was not the only World Champion to be eliminated at this stage either as another British World Champion, Darren Appleton the 2008 World 10-ball Champion, was sent home by a 9-4 scoreline by relative unknown Algerian Taqi Aldin Moustafawi. Appleton along with Peach would have been one of the pre-tournament favourites.

The bad news continued for British fans as Richard Jones lost 9-6 to Jeffrey de Luna and Imran Majid lost 9-7 to Bruno Muratore. Majid has seemingly struggled for form so far this year and would have been hoping that this event could have kick started his second half of 2010.

Another well known player to be sent home early was American, Oscar Dominguez, one of the rising young stars of US pool he capitulated to Del Amo Hector of Spain.

Winners side matches continue through today and Britain Scott Higgins is already into the second round winners side.

Also the tournament will be broadcast live online by Qatari Channel Alkass on the 3rd, 4th and 5th July – World Pool Championships Live Stream.
